Basado en la psicología de Otto Rank, en contraposición al determinismo freudiano. Nace como reacción a la excesiva influencia del psicoanálisis en el trabajo social. Considerando que la relación causa-efecto reflejaba un mecanismo demasiado determinista que dejaba un espacio restringido a la posibilidad de cambio, de evolución y creatividad del individuo.
Este modelo tiene en cuenta la voluntad y la capacidad del individuo para mantener el control de su crecimiento. Dándole la oportunidad de poder efectuar cambios, de ser, al menos en parte, el artífice de su propia vida.
Los funcionalistas centran en el usuario el foco de cambio y atribuyen al trabajador social la tarea de facilitar la exteriorización de sus posibilidades, permitiéndole expresar al máximo sus capacidades y orientándolas al cambio. Se da especial importancia a la relación entre el trabajador social y el usuario, al proceso de ayuda.
