- Teoría de Whorf: Whorf defiende que la lengua materna influye nuestra manera de ver las cosas y eso es incambiable, por lo que un individuo de lengua inglesa no podrá entender nunca el punto de vista de un individuo de habla catalana. Según Whorf, nuestra mente está cerrada según la lengua que hablamos y no se puede abrir a otras culturas u otros puntos de vista.
- Teoría de Hurford: Hurford, lingüista experto en el origen del lenguaje humano, está de acuerdo sólo parcialmente en la teoría de Whorf, según expresó en una entrevista realizada por el diario LA VANGUARDIA el día 21 de agosto de 2009. Según James Hurford, nuestra lengua materna condiciona nuestra manera de entender la realidad, tal y como había dicho Whorf, pero cree que no te cierra de forma definitiva. Hurford afirma que la persona humana puede superar las barreras de la lengua materna y abrirse a los puntos de vista de las otras lenguas y culturas. Como ya hemos dicho anteriormente, ambas teorías son aplicables a la percepción de la imagen, ya que ésta está influenciada por las experiencias personales como es la lengua materna. Se supone que la lengua contiene un montón de prejuicios, tabúes, conceptos, mitos… propios de la cultura en la que se pertenece, pero la primera teoría parece muy radical. De acuerdo con Hurford, considero que nos condicionan muchas otras cosas, además de la lengua. Además todas las lenguas tienen muchas afinidades, sobre todo si están emparentadas, como es el caso del inglés y el catalán. Aunque los hay que tienen un parentesco más cercano, la inglesa y la catalana son culturas demasiado cercanas como para producir cosmologías radicalmente diferentes que se puedan fijar en los idiomas respectivos.
