Durante la década de los 60 y 70, las clásicas caricaturas del argentino Quino nos acercaban a una problemática en el proceso de enseñanza aprendizaje: el significado que cada alumno(a) le da a los nuevos conocimientos, y con esto, a su adquisición. Y es que la evolución tecnológica y la globalización, sin lugar a dudas, a cambiado la estructura cerebral a lo largo de las generaciones. Y eso es lo más fascinante (y a la vez complejo) de la labor docente y la educación: su plasticidad.
Es lógico pensar que a un niño(a), ni aún a un adolescente, le podrá interesar, ni menos podrá retener, algún tipo de información que no tiene (según su parecer) importancia o relación alguna con la cotidianidad. Podemos apreciar esto en el propio aprendizaje de las matemáticas. Las cuatro operaciones básicas carecen de significado hasta que el niño(a) comprende el valor del dinero. Luego de eso, la suma se transforma en riqueza, la resta en pobreza, la multiplicación en un milagro matemático, la división en poco amigable, y al fin las operaciones en una herramienta útil. Estas consideraciones, que para cualquiera pueden parecer lógicas, tienen una explicación mucho más profunda, a nivel cerebral, que los profesionales dedicados al área de la educación intentan dilucidar: ¿cómo se aprende?, cuáles son los límites del aprendizaje? y ¿porqué se olvida lo aprendido?.
David Ausvel, enfocado en psicología educativa y la labor docente desarrolló la Teoría del Aprendizaje Significativo, que tiene relación con el modelo constructivista de enseñanza. Según esto, los nuevos aprendizajes son asimilados de manera más fácil y permanente, en la medida que tengan relación con el entorno y los conocimientos anteriores del que aprende. Aquí juegan un papel importantísimo la “detección de conocimientos/ideas previas” al comienzo de una nueva unidad educativa o temática a trabajar, de modo de crear una conexión o “puente cognitivo” entre ambos estadios. Así, los nuevos conocimientos serán adecuadamente aprendidos y retenidos en la estructura cognitiva del que aprende.

Según esta teoría de Ausubel, para que un nuevo contenido se transforme en un aprendizaje significativo debe ocurrir: Evaluación diagnóstica. Aquí, la claridad, disponibilidad y veracidad de estos conceptos tiene un papel primordial, ya que simbolizan los pilares del conocimiento que se construye. Entrega de la nueva información. Serie de actividades y recursos pedagógicos potencialmente significativos para determinado alumno o grupo. que es la vía que relaciona lo antiguo con lo nuevo, haciendo del segundo un complemento o ampliación del primero. Luego de esta conexión es que el conocimiento nuevo adquiere sentido, más profundo que una simple asociación.
Promover un espacio donde el alumno pueda internalizar y organizar, según su propia estructura cognitiva, de manera que el aprendizaje sea alcanzado. Ausvel propuso la psicología educativa como componente importante de la labor pedagógica, tanto en la elaboración del currículum, como en la didáctica. Su teoría puede resumirse, según sus propias palabras: “Si tuviese que reducir toda la psicología educativa a un sólo principio, enunciaría éste: el factor más importante que influye en el aprendizaje es lo que el alumno ya sabe. Averígüese esto y enséñese consecuentemente.” Visto esto, cabe destacar que desde el primer año de Universidad, hasta pasada la ceremonia de los 30 años de servicio, quien se dedica a educar sabe que las generaciones, los alumnos, la estructura cognitiva, cambian, y transforman su quehacer en un proceso dinámico, además de en un desafío.
